Luis Tyler
Luis Tyler (b. 1930-2016, Warwick, Rhode Island) paints bold abstracted compositions utilizing blocks of color to map out his surface. He was part of the Abstract Expressionism movement and moved to New York City at the age of 20 in 1950. His spontaneous and intense style did not focus on figures or imagery, but on the expression of his brushstrokes and use of canvas.
Luis Tyler’s work has been exhibited at Whitney Museum of American Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art. He is in collections including the Museum of Modern Art and Tate Modern. Later in his life, Tyler taught at Yale and at The New School up until 1998. He died in New York City in 2016 at the age of 86.
